Public Organization Corruption

Political corruption is one of the most negative aspects that can occur in the government and consequently influence the whole country. According to the definition of political corruption, it is the use of power by government officials for private purpose. Political corruption can have various forms and consequences. The forms of corruption consist patronage, cronyism, extortion, bribery, and so on. However, political corruption also can have more negative impacts, such as criminal facilitation like human or drug trafficking and many others. Political corruption exists in all countries, however, each country has its own level of political corruption. According to the United States, in this country, the level of corruption is not high; however, there are also many cases of corruption that still appear in the government.

The Center for Public Integrity released a report that political corruption exists in all the US states. In addition, there was an examination of the issues that concern ethics and accountability in every state of the government. In this report, overall grades were based on average grades in the main categories that included political financing, ethics enforcement agencies, lobbying disclosure, internal auditing, and redistricting. Furthermore, the States were graded on 330 separate metrics, and were divided into 14 different groups. According to the report, most states scored poorly. Eight states earned the lowest grades of 59 or below and they were scored from 1 to 100. The lowest scores showed that regular reports from government and public employees to citizens and watchdog groups are necessary to encourage state integrity.

One of the most significant factors of corruption is a lack of public access to information that is referred to be the main reason of transparency. Hence, the citizens cannot see the way their state does business as well as they are not aware of its decision-making. After examining the report, the results showed that those states that had the lowest scores had lack of watchdog agencies. One of the states that had the worst level of corruption was Virginia, and the report also showed that in this state, where the level of corruption risk is extremely high in comparison with other states, there is no ethics commission. Other states that received the highest marks have long histories of corruption and big governments. The examples of these states are Connecticut and California. Another state, New Jersey, received the highest grades all over the country. In such issues as internal auditing as well as lobbying disclosure, this state got excellent scores. In addition, according to the report, those states, which have historical problems related to the corruption today, have higher accountability scores, and the main reason of this is former offences. Consequently, it is possible to see that such strict measures were created because of the past problems and influenced the politicians to be honest and kept information available. Moreover, in pursuance of the report, the most corrupted states are those which do not have a large population, and the major reason of it is that ‘everybody knows each other’s’ attitude. The most corrupted parties are those which are in power for a long time. In this report, the most corrupted states of the United States were disclosed. The most corrupted states are Michigan and North Dakota, where the overall score is 58%. Such indexes as political financing, legislative accountability, public access to information, and ethics enforcement agencies have the worst grades. Michigan is one of the US states that has many economic, social, and politic problems. As the result, the government avoids some rules and laws and the state has a lack of control. Other states that have the worst grades are South Carolina; it has almost the same score with the previous states and counts to 57%; it also showed the lowest level of all indexes, it has a little bit higher score only in political financing. Maine, has the indexes very similar with South Carolina and shows 56% of the overall grade; Virginia also has one of the lowest scores and counts to 55% since all the issues here have the lowest grade; Wyoming rates 52%; South Dakota 50%; and Georgia 49% (Sauter).

The political corruption can cause many negative aspects to the whole country. The fact is that in the most corruptive countries, there is a difference between public employees and rest of the people. While public employees are involved in corruption and other crimes, their citizens get lack of benefits and payments that they are supposed to get. This situation leads to a large debt and, consequently, economic recession. It is possible to see that the US does not have such a high level of corruption like in some African countries or Russia, however, such countries as Canada and Australia have the lowest level of corruption risk. As it was mentioned above, the poorest states usually have the highest risk of corruption since there are many unresolved issues related to the social, economic, and political problems.

It is certainly the case that the budget of the U.S. government is increasing by more than 2 million dollars almost every minute. According to the article from Rolling Stone, the Fed sent billions of dollars to the banks in such countries like Mexico or Germany, billions to a spate of the car companies of Japan, to Citi groups and Morgan Stanly, and so on (Snyder).

Consequently, there is a lack of budget, which makes the nation have debts and leads to the economic recession and other economic and social negative aftermath. There are many cases related to the political corruption in the United States, such as mail fraud, federal official bribery, gratuity, conflict-of-interest, and others. However, the most dangerous cases relate to such issues as human trafficking and drug trafficking. Usually, these issues appear because of bribing government employees.

To fight with political corruption, the U.S attorney added staff because it can bring the opportunity to reduce the corruption rate. The main reason of this approach is that corruption cases usually emerge among few people and among those who are in power for longer time. Thuswise, the extra staff will help in reducing corruption cases. According to the assistant director in charge of the F.B.I., George Venizelos, “the public trust is an extremely vital for each government as without public trust the government will have trouble working” (Rashbaum).

In conclusion, political corruption is one of the most dangerous issues that have a government. In keeping with the definition of political corruption, it is the use of power by government officials for private purposes. Political corruption can have various forms and consequences.
