I have only recently been directly involved in the business world despite the fact that this sphere was my major one. I have experienced a small, but important, part of the business community, and my time spent within this world gave me a better understanding and appreciation of it. I have developed a unique interest in business at the early stage of my military career. Understanding what it takes to become a leader in such a disciplined and structured organization gave me those skills which cannot be taught in a classroom. As a non-commissioned officer you need to be organized, competent, and most of all a professional and that is what can be said about almost every leadership position in a business. What company wants an employee who does not possess or strive for these qualities?
Since my initial entry into the army, I have worked as a communications security (COMSEC) manager for a major hub in the Department of Defense. Moreover, I have been a direct supervisor for several military and civilian personnel, while managing millions of dollars’ communications equipment in a secure facility. My business assignment which gave me a clear understanding of the business side from the government’s view started quite recently. My current job in the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has broadened my once limited understanding of what major cooperation does. I worked as a project manager and my main duties were to oversee and analyze all the aspects of a proposal, and also to execute a plan to reach a specific goal on time and on budget. This was a daunting task for me as someone with little to the business background, but being a leader in the military gave me the confidence I needed to pull through and be successful in an unfamiliar environment. I have achieved the position of Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of DISA. Being at this level in the Agency I have gained insight into the caliber of leadership needed to run a successful corporation, and it gave me the passion to pursue a career as an officer and a business professional in turn. I have so much respect for my superiors, and during the time being in this position I have learned a lot about myself and what I want to do with my life.

The realm of Information Technology is nothing new to me. My generation has been frequently exposed to it for many years, and it is incredible how quickly it has become a part of everyone’s daily lives. The world became a tiny place because of its rapid transition into the age of technology. Computer science has grown far beyond what anyone has expected and is now the foundation for the human environment. Everything we seem to do in life revolves around technology: the alarm clocks wake us up, machines make us coffee, the radios we listen to on our way to work. All these seemingly menial day-to-day tasks are run by computers. We are heading full force into an ever-expanding technological world, and I just wish to understand and be part of it.
I have been working in the telecommunications field for several years now. I have experienced a small, but important, part of the IT domain, and my time spent within this world has given me a better understanding and appreciation of it. I am eager to become more diverse and knowledgeable about other technologies out there, so as to be prepared for a career in this field. Overseeing specialized technicians at my current job, I have developed an interest in Networking: routers, modems, switches, multiplexers, and other complex pieces of equipment. These devices use a very diverse and complicated thought process to develop a solution that, as for me, seemed impossible to understand. I knew this train of thought probably comes from many years of experience and proper education, but I desperately wanted to understand what they knew.
I have also worked as a communications security (COMSEC) manager for a major hub in the Department of Defense. I have learned how important the value of information is, and how the consequences of such important information being compromised. All security items were to be inventoried three times a day, documented if they were either used or destroyed, and locked up in a secure vault where only personnel with the proper clearance would have access. There is no joking around when it comes to protection against cyber-attacks, terrorism, or information breaches. My experience and my clear understanding of information security will contribute to my success in this degree program, and with my future in this career.
Despite my life and work experience, I still believe that my skills and knowledge can be improved and become better than they are today. That is the main reason why NYU was the best choice for me. Only knowledge received at NYU can help me to find my place in the society I am searching for. My undergraduate studies at NYU will provide me with the qualification and knowledge I need to be successful. It will also provide me with the capabilities to maintain, protect and hopefully develop this ever-evolving technology. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge of this growing field and make my mark as an IT professional with a help of NYU. I am also sure that NYU is a place for me, the place I need and I will do all my best to be a part of it.
